Greenpeace is encouraged that President Bush has brought hydrogen and fuel cells into the national spotlight as a solution to our nation's energy problems. However, his FreedomFuel initiative in its current form is a dirty energy trap for Americans. Unless hydrogen is produced using clean energy sources -- not coal and nuclear power as the Bush plan proposes --our country's security will be further undermined with increased nuclear waste and accelerated global warming.
In response to the Food and Drug Administration's failure to require labeling for genetically engineered (GE) food, Greenpeace today released the True Food Shopping List, a detailed list of thousands of products made with ingredients from genetically altered corn, soy, canola, and other crops. The international environmental organization contacted dozens of food companies to determine whether or not they have taken action to eliminate genetically engineered ingredients from their products.
The rights of American consumers to know what they are eating and feeding their families was today denied them by the Food and Drug Administration. The new FDA policy proposal, posted on the web today, does not require labeling or any pre- market safety testing of genetically engineered foods. Instead, FDA has sided with the biotech industry, which vehemently fights mandatory labeling of gene-altered food.
Following on the heels of the recent Greenpeace action to "quartine" Aquabounty's genetically engineered fish facility, Maryland passed a law outlawing open water production of the experimental fish. Maryland is the first state to take precautionary measures to limit genetically engineered (GE) fish production. Citing concerns over native fish threats, the Maryland governor signed a bill that restricts GE fish production to contained ponds and lakes.
Greenpeace and Students from University of California (UC) campuses have kicked-off a 10-day tour of California this week with the "Rolling Sunlight" solar truck to press UC officials to pass a comprehensive clean energy and green building policy.
California wine makers will face massive consumer rejection if they accept genetically engineered (GE) grapes, according to a just-released report by Greenpeace. More than 30 requests for field trials of engineered grapes have already been granted in California and other states, including research into GE grapes resistant to Pierce's Disease. A Greenpeace survey of British retailers representing 80 percent of the UK's wine sales found that all would refuse to carry wine made from gene-altered grapes. Britain is the largest export market for California wine, consuming 30 percent of the state's wine exports. The report also includes a compilation of U.S. public opinion polls that show increasing concern among Americans about GE crops.
A year-long campaign to force Trader Joe's to drop its use of genetically engineered (GE) ingredients in its store brand products ended today as the mainstream grocery chain announced it would do just that, "effective immediately." According to the company statement, "...we will work with any new vendor to produce private label products for Trader Joe's without genetically engineered ingredients. Our goal for existing private label products is to have all such products reformulated, if necessary, and certified within one year." Eighty-five percent of the products sold at Trader Joe's stores will be affected by this policy change as they carry the company name brand.
Greenpeace applauded General Motors today on its announcement to eliminate polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or vinyl plastic, from its automobile interiors. The international environmental organization then called on the worldwide auto industry to follow GM’s lead.
In response to an Environmental Protection Agency report showing Americans are at even greater cancer risk from dioxins than originally believed, Greenpeace today called on EPA to immediately release the full dioxin report and implement a Dioxin Emergency Action Plan to prevent and eliminate new dioxin releases.
