Greenpeace sponsored the 5K road race to raise awareness of the nation's vulnerability to catastrophes at facilities that use volatile hazardous chemicals and to highlight the solutions that are available. The event was the first of its kind for the environmental group.
Washington, DC, May 20, 2003 - President Bush today endorsed a timber industry-backed bill that would allow virtually unchecked logging in national forests under the guise of protecting communities from wildfires.
A nationwide coalition of environmental groups released a new report today that identifies the national forests at greatest risk from logging and documents the Bush Administration's attempts to eliminate public oversight of environmental laws. Greenpeace and the National Forest Protection Alliance (NFPA) released Endangered Forests, Endangered Freedoms in response to the Administration's unprecedented attacks on America's national forests.
With cold and flu season in full swing, Greenpeace today released its Recycled Tissue and Toilet Paper Guide, a credit card-sized shopping guide that helps consumers find the greenest household paper products. The international environmental organization Greenpeace this afternoon brought its campaign to Stop Star Wars to President Clinton's doorstep. Greenpeace activists will use a 50-foot inflatable missile to urge the President to "Stop Star Wars".
The University of California Board of Regents voted unanimously today in favor of a Clean Energy and Green Building policy. This Friday the 13th marks an “Unlucky 13” for Kleenex and parent company Kimberly-Clark (K-C) as Purchase College has become the 13th university to take action against them. Purchase College has joined the growing university movement against Kimberly-Clark because the company continues to make disposable tissues out of wood fiber from clearcut forests—including the North American Boreal forest--one of the largest remaining ancient forests. In addition to sourcing from ancient forests, Kimberly-Clark has also failed to increase its use of recycled content across all products, which would decrease its dependency on virgin fiber from pristine forests.
Greenpeace activists wearing "Forest Crimes Unit" shirts, cordoned off the U.S. Forest Service Headquarters in downtown Portland with crime scene tape today while handing out posters reading, "President Bush, Most Wanted for Forest Crimes." Employees coming in and out of the U.S. Forest Service office were given a whistle blower number (1-800-326-0959) in order to report forest crimes while a program exposing Bush's environmental policies and his attempts to cut the public out of public lands broadcast from the radio. The protest comes just one day before President Bush is due to visit Portland.
