Our Favorite Greenpeace Videos of 2019

December 17, 2019

Our team of video producers has been hard at work documenting the stories of our movement, the challenges we’ve faced, and the successes we’ve achieved.

As 2019 comes to an end, we’re taking a look back at some of the Greenpeace videos that made their mark throughout the year. Below you’ll find some of our biggest moments of 2019, from our work campaigning for the most ambitious conservation effort in human history to utilizing creative resistance in the form of a giant plastic monster.

We hope you enjoy watching them as much as we enjoyed making them!

1. Ask Amazon: Why So Much Dirty Energy to Power the Cloud?

Amazon, the owner of the largest cloud hosting company in the world, is still powering its massive data centers with fracked gas and dirty coal, which contributes to climate change. In February, Greenpeace rebranded Crystal City, Virginia, future home to Amazon’s HQ2, with a human-sized Alexa to bring attention to the company’s stalled progress towards its 100% renewable energy commitment. Commuters had the chance to ask Alexa about Amazon’s energy use.

2. What is Nestlé doing about plastic pollution?

Nestlé has created a #PlasticMonster. In 2018, Nestlé produced 1.7 million tonnes of plastic packaging last year — a 13% increase from the year before! Greenpeace and our supporters around the world are calling on mega-corporations like Nestlé to stop polluting our planet with single-use plastic.

3. The Making of a Plastic Monster

Greenpeace activists and a 15-foot tall monster delivered Nestlé plastic pollution gathered from streets, rivers, and beaches to Nestlé’s U.S. headquarters in Arlington, VA. The activists demanded that Nestlé take responsibility for the over 1.5 million metric tons of single-use plastic it produces annually. Meet the artists who created the plastic monster and see how the artists created it out of single-use plastic litter in North Carolina.

4. Jane Fonda: The Environment Needs You

The clock is ticking, and the Earth doesn’t need excuses. It needs you. Join Greenpeace supporter Jane Fonda and become part of our fight to protect the environment and change the world.

5. Sargas-So What?!

The Sargasso Sea is home to sea turtles, the Bermuda Triangle, and waaaay too much plastic. We journeyed to the Sargasso Sea to research the impact of plastic pollution on this ecosystem and to call for a strong Global Oceans Treaty to protect areas like the Sargasso Sea from the threats they’re facing.

6. Baby Sea Turtles Need Our Help

It’s tough being a baby sea turtle. Less than 1 in 1,000 hatchlings survive to adulthood! In their first minutes on the beach birds, crabs, raccoons, and foxes prey on these little critters. Then in the water, seabirds, and fish will continue to snatch them up. And that is just natural predators. We need to give baby sea turtles the best shot at flourishing. With a global network of ocean sanctuaries, we can protect turtles and all critters in the ocean.

7. Greenpeace Climbers Blockade Houston Ship Channel

Greenpeace climbers shut down the largest oil export channel in the United States. Here’s why they did it.

8. Youth Climate Strikes

Indigenous people, poor communities, and communities of color contribute the least to the climate crisis, yet they bear the worst of its impacts. On September 20, millions of youth and adults around the world took to the streets to call for a just transition to a renewable future. And we’ll continue to strike. Join us!

9. Studying Sea Turtles in the Sargasso Sea

Journeying to the Sargasso Sea, Nerine Constant and Alexandra Gulick, Ph.D. candidates at the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research in the Biology Department of the University of Florida, researched the impact of plastic pollution on this ecosystem and its wildlife. The Sargasso Sea is a unique region in the North Atlantic Ocean that is home to a drifting algae called sargassum, which is used by turtles and other organisms for parts of their life cycle. The scientists collected data including temperatures of sargassum mats to determine if the sargassum helps incubate the juvenile sea turtles who spend their ‘lost years’ in the Sargasso Sea.

10. A World of Reuse: For the Bath

Every day, more and more people from all around the world are finding the real answer to the plastic pollution crisis, an answer that companies have so far failed to implement: REDUCE and REUSE. We worked with a team of brilliant animators to make a video series featuring some of the best solutions from around the world to help envision the future we’re fighting for.

11. A Zero Waste Christmas Carol

Greenpeace carolers put together a parody music video of a classic holiday song to send a message to Target: ditch single-use plastic! For way too long, big retailers like Target have failed to take action on single-use plastics, putting the responsibility on customers and communities to deal with this mess. To call Target out, our very own, Rico, wrote the lyrics and we filmed the music video with the help of Greenpeace staff volunteers. We had a lot of fun making the video and hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
