AB 421 passes the California Assembly, bringing the state one step closer to democratic reform

SACRAMENTO, CA (May 31, 2023)–In response to Assembly Bill 421 passing the California Assembly, Ben Smith, Senior Campaigner at Greenpeace USA, said: “Today’s vote in the California Assembly to advance referendum reforms brings us one step closer to returning control of our democracy to the people. While the referendum process was built for everyday Californians, it has been hijacked by industry bullies. That’s why today, we celebrate AB 421 passing out of the Assembly, because these common sense changes will ensure our democracy empowers everyday people by making the referendum processes both more transparent and accessible. Far too many times, corporations have spent their millions to essentially veto any new law they deem a threat to their plentiful profits.

“When special interest groups and wealthy corporations attack workers, when they attack community members, when they attack our planet and the health of our children, we need to stand together and say no more!”
