Pope Francis Addresses U.N. General Assembly: Greenpeace Response

September 25, 2015

New York City, September 25, 2015 — Greenpeace International Executive Director Kumi Naidoo backs Pope Francis' call to address the inherent injustice of climate change.

In reaction to the Pope’s speech to the UN summit on Sustainable Development Goals, Kumi Naidoo,  Executive Director of Greenpeace International, said:

“Pope Francis has once again reminded world leaders that alleviating poverty and preserving the environment are part of the same struggle. As a global community, we must remedy the fundamental injustice of climate change: that those least responsible for causing it are being impacted the most.

“We echo his call for the Paris agreement to be strong and effective, and that it must be followed by action. The first action must be creating a mechanism to increase the ambition of climate pledges made by most countries, which currently fall well short of what’s needed to avoid catastrophic climate change.

“Our world leaders should start now by speeding up the complete phase-out of fossil fuels, and the transition to 100 percent renewable energy by the middle of the century.

“Greenpeace’s Energy (R)evolution, launched this week, shows how we can turn the shared vision of people around the world, championed today by the Pope, into reality. This scientific study demonstrates how to achieve 100 percent renewable energy by the middle of this century, providing a sustainable energy future for everyone.  It can be done, it must be done, and it will be done.”
