Offshore Oil Leasing Program Final Comment Period Ends

The Obama Administration enters a crucial moment as the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management offshore oil and gas leasing program comment period ends today.

The President and his team have before them more than one million comments from frontline communities and concerned citizens calling for a ban on all new offshore leases for more fossil fuel extraction.

In reaction, Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard said:

“It’s make or break time for President Obama’s climate legacy. Offshore drilling is not an option. The right decision for a safe and healthy future is to put the Arctic and the Gulf of Mexico out of the oil industry’s reach for good. Over one million comments from frontline communities and concerned citizens call for a ban on all new fossil fuels offshore leases. Will the President listen?

“To continue business-as-usual offshore fossil fuel extraction and ignore the call of impacted communities would be a dirty stain on President Obama’s record. Big oil companies are relinquishing their leases in the Arctic Ocean because they’ve realized they will never be able to safely extract oil there. We must keep fossil fuels in the ground to avoid the worst impacts of runaway climate change.”
