"Fifteen billion dollars is a lot of money, but if the Governor really wants to future-proof California as he said, then he must know that throwing money at the problem while continuing to approve new fossil fuel permits that are driving the climate chaos, is nonsensical."

Sequoia National Park, California — Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed an over $15 billion climate package, including nearly $4 billion for electric vehicles, $5 billion for drought management, and $1.5 billion for wildfires, forest management, and prescribed burns in the state of California.

In response, Senior Climate Campaigner Dr. Amy Moas said:

“Fifteen billion dollars is a lot of money, but if the Governor really wants to future-proof California as he said, then he must know that throwing money at the problem while continuing to approve new fossil fuel permits that are driving the climate chaos, is nonsensical. It is like trying to mop up an overflowing bathtub without first turning off the faucet.

“Newsom also failed to mention the need for bold investments into a just transition for the workers and communities most impacted by the climate crisis and the path toward a renewable energy economy.”

Last month, activists with Greenpeace USA, Oil & Gas Action Network, and Regenerating Paradise gathered both at a burn scar site in the North Complex Fire and at the largest urban oil field in Los Angeles to urge Governor Newsom to take immediate action to phase out fossil fuels and end neighborhood drilling to ensure the livability of California.

To maintain independence, Greenpeace USA does not endorse or oppose any political party, candidate, or elected official. We work to hold all elected officials to the standard that science says is necessary to avert the climate crisis, which means supporting a Green New Deal and a just transition off of fossil fuels.
