Newly-formed Business Coalition’s Call for Reduction is Not Enough; We Need to Limit Plastic Production

September 21, 2022

A group of businesses, convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the World Wide Fund for Nature, launched the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty today. The Coalition has called for the “development of an ambitious and effective global treaty to end plastic pollution.” While we welcome some of the perspectives shared by the Business Coalition, it is clearly not enough. With the upcoming negotiation of the Global Plastics Treaty this November, businesses must align themselves on the right side of history and support an ambitious plastics agreement that will finally end the age of plastic.

Washington, DC (September 21, 2022) A group of businesses, convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the World Wide Fund for Nature, launched the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty today. The Coalition has called for the “development of an ambitious and effective global treaty to end plastic pollution.”

In response, Greenpeace USA Oceans Campaign Director, John Hocevar, said: “The Coalition statement makes it clear that we cannot afford to keep flooding the planet with throwaway plastic packaging. But it is not enough to just reduce production through a ‘circular economy approach.’ We need a legally binding Global Plastics Treaty that will immediately limit and reduce total plastic production and use. This is the ‘ambitious treaty’ that businesses must rally behind if they truly want to solve the plastics crisis.

“The Coalition’s call to eliminate some types of plastic and move away from single-use plastic to reuse models is a step in the right direction. It provides a clear contrasting position to the fossil fuel industry that wants to keep extracting oil and gas to produce more plastic. We will be watching closely to see if the Business Coalition will be true to its vision.

“While we welcome some of the perspectives shared by the Business Coalition, it is clearly not enough. With the upcoming negotiation of the Global Plastics Treaty this November, businesses must align themselves on the right side of history and support an ambitious plastics agreement that will finally end the age of plastic.”
