Democrats win control of the U.S. House, Republicans maintain control of the U.S. Senate

In response to the 2018 midterm election results, in which the Republicans are projected to maintain control of the U.S. Senate and Democrats to win control of the U.S. House of Representatives, Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard said,

“The midterm elections were a make-or-break moment for leaving a better world to future generations — one with clean air and water, a safe climate, and a democracy that works for all of us. Thanks to the hard work of everyday people who organized voters across the country, we finally have some wind in our sails to make real progress on climate change, the most urgent crisis facing humanity.”

“We can go to bed tonight knowing that some newly elected climate champions in Congress can help resist the worst of Trump’s attacks on the environment and his insistence to roll back any progress on climate change, but only if we continue to hold Congress accountable. We’re celebrating, but we must also get to work to push policies for climate action, environmental protections, social and economic justice, and democracy reform.”

Greenpeace USA has been active in supporting Initiative 1631, the Carbon Emissions Fee Measure in Washington State; Colorado Proposition 112, which would keep fracking 2500 feet away from occupied buildings; Portland’s Clean Energy Initiative 26-201; the campaign to vote “No” on 105 in Oregon, a measure that would throw out a critical anti-racial profiling law; and Florida’s Second Chances Amendment 4, which will return voting eligibility to people who have completed their criminal sentences for most felony convictions.
