"The G7 has taken a bold step in advocating to safeguard 30% of lands and oceans by 2030. We congratulate the US for finally taking a stance on this issue internationally. However, the US played a part in urging vague language to ‘protect or conserve’ our lands and oceans instead of holding a stronger position."

Today, G7 environment and climate ministers agreed to action on biodiversity loss by conserving or protecting at least 30% of global land and at least 30% of the global ocean by 2030.

In response, Greenpeace USA Senior Oceans Campaigner Greenpeace USA Arlo Hemphill said:

“The G7 has taken a bold step in advocating to safeguard 30% of lands and oceans by 2030. We congratulate the US for finally taking a stance on this issue internationally. However, the US played a part in urging vague language to ‘protect or conserve’ our lands and oceans instead of holding a stronger position. One could argue that 30% of US waters are already under a form of conservation, including areas where offshore drilling and commercial fishing are permitted.”

“Scientists tell us we must fully or highly protect 30% of the oceans and land to safeguard biodiversity and buffer the worst impacts of the climate crisis. We need areas with zero commercial extraction, where nature and fish populations that fisheries depend on can recover and thrive. The US is not yet committed to that level of protection, and we urge the Biden Administration to go further.”
