Greenpeace Targets Kellogg’s for Double Standards on Food Safety

July 6, 2010

To highlight its concern about Kellogg's continued use of genetically engineered ingredients in the food it produces for US consumers, Greenpeace served a "Kellogg's-free breakfast" aboard its ship the Arctic Sunrise docked this weekend in San Diego harbor. The breakfast, attended by nearly 100 members of the public, featured foods with organically grown ingredients, guaranteed not to be contaminated by genetically engineered soya, corn or canola.

The San Diego event coincided with another Greenpeace action
this morning at Kellogg’s headquarters in Battle Creek, Michigan as
the company staged a massive public relations event, serving
thousands of people at the world’s largest breakfast table. In the
midst of the proceedings Greenpeace activists erected a 12-foot
cereal box of “Frosted Fakes”, bearing the image of “FrankenTony”,
a genetically altered version of Kellogg’s “Tony the Tiger”.

Both events are part of an escalating campaign by Greenpeace to
stop Kellogg’s from using genetically engineered ingredients as it
has done in Europe for consumers there.

“Kellogg’s must provide Americans with the same protection as
Europeans,” said Greenpeace campaigner Beverley Thorpe in San
Diego. “When it comes to the safety of our food supply and the
protection of our environment, double standards are completely
unacceptable.”

During the coming weeks Greenpeace will intensify its campaign
against Kellogg’s in California where it is launching its True Food
Network (www.truefoodnow.org )which will empower
thousands of members of the public through the internet and public
events to take action against Kellogg’s on this issue.

In Europe consumer action by Greenpeace and other consumer
groups has resulted in foods with genetically engineered
ingredients being taken off most supermarket shelves.

Earlier this week, Greenpeace activists removed Kellogg’s
cereals from a popular grocery store in San Francisco and replaced
them with locally available organic alternatives. There will be
further events in the coming days.
