It’s essential that President Biden delivers on his commitment to end subsidies within his first year in office. Rather than line the pockets of fossil fuel executives, that money needs to be invested in America’s communities and workers.

In response to Biden’s Presidential Budget, Greenpeace USA Senior Climate Campaigner John Noël said:

“We are in a moment of urgency, and we desperately need to invest in our infrastructure and communities at the scale the moment demands. President Biden’s fiscal year 2022 budget is a positive step toward delivering support to American families, providing clean air and water for our communities, and protecting the planet, but there is much more that must be done. Our movement has given President Biden a blueprint for creating 15 million jobs while furthering racial and economic justice, and we will not stop until it becomes a reality.

“The President’s budget repeals some fossil fuel subsidies. It’s essential that President Biden delivers on his commitment to end subsidies within his first year in office. Rather than line the pockets of fossil fuel executives, that money needs to be invested in America’s communities and workers.

“The Obama Administration also eliminated some fossil fuel subsidies in its various budget requests. The Biden Administration must learn from past mistakes and champion the issue in Congress. They can start by cutting off negotiations with the fossil fuel-controlled Republican Party and begin the budget reconciliation process to ensure subsidies are eliminated in the forthcoming infrastructure bill. Policymakers have talked about stopping reckless and wasteful fossil fuel subsidies for well over a decade. It needs to end once and for all. Repealing all subsidies and preferential treatment to fossil fuel corporations is a commonsense and baseline policy for any climate-related legislation.”
