Greenpeace Response to Associated Press Investigation into Forced Labor on Hawaiian Fishing Vessels

Washington, DC – A new Associated Press investigation revealed that Hawaiian seafood is being caught by foreign crews paid inadequate wages and confined on boats. Hundreds of undocumented workers are employed in a fishing fleet that allows them to work but exempts them from basic labor protections.

In response to the investigation, Greenpeace Oceans Campaigner Kate Melges said:

“This investigation is one more example of how the seafood industry is plagued with human rights and labor abuses. U.S. retailers cannot continue to turn a blind eye to this endemic problem. From Sam’s Club and Walmart to Costco, it is up to retailers to ensure they know where their seafood is coming from and how it is caught. Retailers must be able to guarantee that their customers are not supporting horrific working conditions by purchasing seafood in their stores.

“The industry touts Hawaiian seafood as some of the most sustainable in the world, but there is nothing sustainable or just about forcing migrant workers into deplorable conditions for weeks on end to catch every last fish for profit. The investigation also shows that U.S. regulators are complicit in major labor violations happening within our borders. The loopholes that allow this to happen must be closed so we can ensure that everyone working under a U.S. flag has the protections and rights they deserve.

“It is long overdue for seafood companies and retailers to face these abuses head on, take responsibility, and create an industry that does not put profits before the health and well-being of workers and our oceans. Until they do, consumers cannot trust the seafood they are buying and should demand better for themselves and their families.”
