Greenpeace responds to Obama Administration Offshore Drilling Program

January 27, 2015

In response to the release from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management announcing their five-year offshore leasing program that includes future leases in the Arctic Ocean for oil and gas drilling, Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard gave the following statement:

“President Obama and the global scientific community know that the best safeguard against catastrophic climate change is to keep fossil fuels, like Arctic oil, in the ground.” said Greenpeace Executive Director Annie Leonard.

“In the same week the Obama administration proposes wilderness protection for 12 million acres in the Arctic National Refuge, the Department of Interior announces they are putting the Arctic on the auction block. President Obama can’t save the Arctic on Sunday just to sell it to the highest bidder on Tuesday.”
