If we want a Green New Deal, we need climate leaders in office — but who?

by Adrienne Lowry

November 2, 2020

Greenpeace has identified some of these climate leaders, just like we did during the primary elections.

No matter who wins the White House, Greenpeace supporters and our allies in the climate movement have a fight ahead of us in 2021. We have the power as a movement to replace the climate denier in the White House with a candidate who can be pressured and moved towards the green future that we need.

Learn more about Greenpeace’s dedication to building — and flexing — people power to champion the passage of  Green New Deal.

But the fight doesn’t stop at the top of the ticket. In order to pass a Green New Deal and phase out fossil fuel production through a just transition, we need to ensure that the climate crisis is at the top of the legislative agenda of the new Congress.

That’s why Greenpeace is also focusing on encouraging our supporters to elect climate leaders to Congress this November.

Who are the Climate Leaders running for office?

Greenpeace has identified some of these climate leaders, just like we did during the primary elections. We need legislators who are committed to stopping the expansion of fossil fuels and ensuring a just transition with a Green New Deal.

We particularly want to uplift the following candidates in priority races who we have identified as climate leaders.

Every candidate on our list has signed the No Fossil Fuel Money pledge and supports a Green New Deal

Additionally, these candidates meet one or more of the following criteria:

  1. Co-sponsored or publicly support the THRIVE Agenda for a green and just recovery from the crises we phase
  2. Co-sponsored or public support the End Polluter Welfare Act to end federal giveaways to the fossil fuel industry and stop fossil fuel bailouts

In some cases, we don’t yet know where they stand on the THRIVE Agenda and the End Polluter Welfare Act — but their records and campaign platforms suggest to us that our movement can work with them to pass legislation that will help workers and frontline communities recover from the crises we are facing today, and say “no more” to fossil fuel companies’ reckless plans to drill their way to climate catastrophe.

To be clear: Greenpeace USA is not endorsing these candidates. When it comes to those in power, we support candidates who have pledged the policies we listed above – and we then show up and make sure they keep their promises. Once elected, we need these leaders to enact a Green New Deal and take on fossil fuel CEOs.

What we do believe is that these candidates’ records show their commitment to be the kind of leaders we need in government. And we’re ready to work with volunteers and supporters like you to hold these candidates and all elected officials accountable to meet the demands of science and justice.

Who are some of the climate leaders to support?

Greenpeace supporters have been going above and beyond to get out the vote for these candidates — and important battleground states — to ensure that we have a legislative branch ready to fight for a Green New Deal and a fossil fuel phase-out starting in January 2021. Greenpeace volunteers have contacted over three million voters and counting through our call team, text team, Unidxs team, and the Greenpeace 2020 leadership program to communicate the importance of this election and prepare to mobilize after the election — because we know, this fight doesn’t end on November 3rd.

This is just the beginning of our fight — electing climate leaders won’t fix everything, but it will give us an opening to demand real change in Washington. After the election, we must be prepared to ramp up the pressure on all elected officials to pass a Green New Deal and ensure a green, just, and peaceable future.
