California Climate Action Academy

Greenpeace’s California Climate Action Academy will empower you to take action in your community. Now is the time to demand our governor work for the future that Californians want today.

California has long been a leader in environmentalism and conservation, but did you also know that it is one of the largest fossil fuel producing states in the nation? The oil and gas industry continues to have a firm hold on policymakers within the Golden State. Two years ago, we elected Gavin Newsom as our newest governor with a strong environmental policy and vision, but he is still approving permits for oil and gas operations, putting our communities at risk.

Join us at Greenpeace’s California Climate Action Academy, where we’ll share the knowledge and skills needed to take action in your community to the next level. Now is the time to demand our governor work for the future that Californians want today.

More on the issue: Greenpeace USA is a member of the Last Chance Alliance, a coalition of more than 750 organizations urging Governor Newsom to STOP issuing new oil and gas permits, DROP existing production while ensuring a just transition for impacted communities and workers, and ROLL out a 2,500 foot public health and safety buffer between fossil fuel extraction sites and our communities. Right now, California is reeling from a global pandemic that puts communities with worse air pollution at greater risk of dying from COVID-19, and we are reckoning with the legacy of racism that has led to people of color making up 92% of Californians living near drilling in already heavily polluted areas. Meanwhile, Governor Newsom chose this moment to end his temporary fracking moratorium, issuing a total of 48 permits to Aera Energy and Chevron. Despite his commitments to draw down fossil fuels, he’s also continued expanding oil and gas operations, issuing nearly 7,500 oil and gas permits since taking office as Governor. It’s time to send a strong message to Governor Newsom that Californians across the state will not permit this ongoing public health, environmental racism, and climate crisis.
