Typhoon Carina, also known internationally as Typhoon Gaemi, recently intensified into a super typhoon, bringing widespread devastation to parts to Northern Luzon and Metro Manila, enhancing the southwest monsoon and leading to severe flooding and heavy rainfall. The typhoon forced thousands of residents to evacuate their homes and disrupted daily life across affected regions.

The last time Manila and surrounding provinces faced rains and flooding comparable to Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon was during Super Typhoon Rolly (international name: Goni) and Tropical Storm Ondoy (international name: Ketsana). Such extreme “once-in-a-decade” rains are becoming more common due to heating ocean waters caused by climate change. The burning of fossil fuels (oil, coal, gas) releases greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming and result in warmer sea temperatures and altered atmospheric patterns. These changes foster the development of more powerful and destructive storms, posing greater risks to vulnerable communities.

Greenpeace is currently documenting the climate disaster and coordinating possible response and relief efforts, watch this space for daily updates. #ReliefPH

More frequent and intense extreme weather like super typhoon Carina have taken away lives and livelihoods, left thousands of families without homes, and destroyed our natural resources. The biggest fossil fuel companies (oil, coal, and gas companies), who have contributed the most to the climate crisis, continue to rake in huge profits while our people and planet suffer.
