As the world marks Earth Day 2025, Greenpeace Philippines is calling on candidates in the upcoming midterm elections to put climate justice front and center of their platforms. The group also urged candidates to respond to a critical question: “Paano mo ipaglalaban ang kinabukasan ng mga Pilipino?” (How would you fight for the future of Filipinos?)

With the country hit by six typhoons in just 30 days last year, and 2024 recorded as the hottest year ever, the group says the 2025 elections must be a referendum on climate action.

“Climate change is already threatening our rights to food, water, health, and security,” said Lea Guerrero, Greenpeace Philippines Country Director. “Candidates must go beyond promises and deliver bold, people-centered solutions.”

Greenpeace released a 5-point Climate Justice Agenda as both a guide for voters and a challenge to candidates:

  1. Champion communities with inclusive, rights-based adaptation;
  2. Hold polluters accountable—make them pay for climate damage;
  3. Back a Just Energy Transition away from fossil fuels;
  4. Promote health-focused climate policies; and
  5. Mainstream climate justice across all levels of governance.

Without urgent and systemic action, Greenpeace warns, the climate crisis will exacerbate poverty, hunger, and inequality–top issues for Filipino voters. “This Earth Day, let’s demand real action because our lives and our future depend on it. The climate fight is everyone’s fight,” Guerrero said.
