PROJECT’S SCOPE 

The Islam & Climate project is an innovative and experimental endeavour aimed at contributing to the creation of a climate movement in the Muslim world by exploring Islam as a vector of engagement and mobilisation. The project will be implemented by a number of Greenpeace offices, Muslim organisations, and other allies.

OVERALL PURPOSE

The campaigner is responsible for supporting the effective development and implementation of the Islam and Climate strategies in the MENA region to achieve global campaign objectives and will lead to key elements of the project.

SCOPE 

The post holder is line managed by the Project Leader and will support the development and delivery of the Islam & Climate project, leading on specific activities in the MENA region. She/he will work closely with the project comms lead and project digital lead on the development and implementation of the comms and engagement strategy with a special focus on achieving the campaign objectives. She/he will also be responsible for developing and maintaining the alliance with external organisations and individuals and be one of its key spokespeople including with media, NGO, religious or political stakeholders.

The responsibilities require considerable independence and initiative from the post holder. Decisions made by the post holder will impact the overall success of the global project.

RESPONSIBILITIES

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION Support the implementation of the Islam & Climate project in the MENA region, leading on specific activities (including their strategic development) and working with the other team members, colleagues in our international network and our allies to achieve the overall theory of change and campaign objectives.

PROJECT COMMS & ENGAGEMENT INTEGRATION Support the development and delivery of the project’s comms & engagement strategy by ensuring that campaigns objectives are well integrated.

ALLIANCE BUILDING Act as GP MENA focal point in the Islam & Climate project alliance. Lead on maintaining, developing and supporting the alliance by ensuring smooth strategic and practical coordination as well as the successful integration of new partners.

SPOKESPERSON Act as project spokesperson conveying the campaign messages to the media and other key stakeholders. 

RELATIONSHIP BUILDING Build relationships with stakeholders which are key for the successful delivery of the project including with NGO, religious and political stakeholders.   

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

Educational Qualifications

  • Graduate degree from an academic institution preferably in environmental studies, social sciences or other related disciplines.

Experience: 

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant, practical working experience within environmental and grassroots organisations.
  • Exposure to the design, implementation and management of environmental campaigns and/or development projects; understanding the roles that science, politics, economics, industry, media and social change play in campaigning on a global and regional level.
  • Good lobbying and advocacy skills. 
  • Strong communication skills – both written and oral, with experience of representing an organisation publicly in the media and/or at meetings and an ability to write high-quality materials (e.g. reports, briefing documents).
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Proven ability to work constructively as part of a team and actively pursuing networking with the ability to work remotely.

  • Ability to build strong interpersonal relationships, in particular, working with cross-cultural and global teams and with those in external organisations. 
  • Ability to lead, motivate and instil the passion.
  • Project management and the ability to coordinate with other organisations.
  • Innovative and be creative.

  • Knowledge sharing – Values diversity, in particular, experience in working in an international environment and coordination of rollouts across global markets.

Functional Competencies 

  • Excellent command of written and verbal communications skills in Arabic and good command of the English language.
  • A good understanding of the MENA region and of Islamic faith & culture.
  • French and additional languages are a plus.
