Greenpeace MENA welcomes the United Arab Emirates’s announcement of its commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Greenpeace MENA’s executive director, Ghiwa Nakat declared: “We commend the UAE for this landmark announcement for the region, one that puts pressure on other Gulf countries to come out of the shadows and follow suit”.

Nakat continued: “The UAE needs to communicate as soon as possible how they intend to fulfill their commitment to avoid joining the long series of net zero targets that has been abused by some governments and companies, offering nice long-term targets instead of short-term action and heavily relying on distracting and unproven carbon offset initiatives”.She concluded: “climate change is a global threat that requires a global reduction of carbon emissions, hence fossil fuel exporting countries have a responsibility beyond their national borders. We urge the UAE to stop expanding their investment in oil and gas at home and abroad”.

Fight Climate Change!

Climate change is happening. Those who have contributed the least to the climate crisis are the most at risk. That’s why a growing number of communities are taking legal action: to hold governments and fossil fuel companies accountable and to secure their rights to a stable climate and healthy environment.
