Purpose

  • To provide effective direction to the Communications Department by building the Communications strategy for the region and support each local communications officer to translate the regional communications strategy into local communications strategy in each country,
  • To provide effective direction to build a strong and consistent identity for GP Med through TV, press and electronic media, heightening the organization’s influence and impact in the region.
  • To provide management and coaching to the team of communications officers in the region.

Main responsibilities

Strategic Planning

  • Set the strategy for the overall Communications of GP Med in the region,
  • Support the communications officers in the region in the local communication strategy building,
  • Liaise with the Peace Advisor to link our campaigns communications with peace and conflicts dynamics
  • Elevate the organization’s presence in key media outlets, and with opinion leaders who influence the environment agenda.
  • Devise and implement strategies for sign-up initiatives and events to help raise GP Med’s visibility and deepen its connection to key stakeholders and constituencies.
  • Make sure that all media communication is in line with GP’s core values and strategies.

Coordination

  • Collaborate with Deputy New Media Director to set priorities across organizational initiatives and other deliverables;
  • Partner with Program Director, FR & Mobilization Director, Campaigns Unit Head, Actions Unit Head
  • Responsible communications member in the Crisis Management Team, to ensure liaison with media, and control of statements during a crisis.

Public Relations

  • Sustain strong relationships with journalists, producers, media agencies and editors
  • Act as the spoke person on media when necessary.
  • Insert GP Med into key policy debates unfolding in media and political circles, raising GP Med’s influence and connection with opinion leaders, key stakeholders and constituencies
  • Support Executive Director and other staff members in promoting GP Med externally.

Internal Communication

  • Provide regular input across the senior leadership and overall staff;
  • Keep organizational messages consistent and effective
  • Carry out the consistent internal communications, both within GP Med and within GP in compliance with the guidelines set by SMT.

Management & Control

  • Line manage the activities of the Communications Officers in Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey and Italy,
  • Standardize print, design and production processes for Greenpeace communications
  • Be responsible for Greenpeace copyrights and visual assets within the region.
  • Ensure the distribution of images and footage, and process invoices and payments for all audio – visual materials accordingly.
  • Keep abreast of emerging media platforms, assess their cost effectiveness and adjust the organization’s use of new tools as appropriate.
  • Oversee and manage available resources.
  • Track and measure effectiveness of the communications tools used by the organization: develop measurable benchmarks to track progress
  • Oversee quality control for all publicly available written Comms products from GP Med.

Budgeting

  • Prepare and manage the GP Med Communications Budget
  • Adhere to initiatives taken by Finance and Development functions.

Qualifications

Experience :

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in journalism, or public relations, media communications, marketing and/or nonprofit management roles,
  • Experience with video production and editing preferred,

Skills and attributes:

  • Extensive contacts throughout traditional and new media fields and strong reputation in journalism/communications,
  • Deep understanding of how environment and environment related political issues are covered across traditional and electronic media,
  • Demonstrated ability to strategize, organize, articulate message, prioritize across parallel initiatives, and have the confidence of senior management,
  • Track record of implementing innovations to raise the profile of controversial or low-visibility issues,
  • Proven skills in staff and project management,
  • Good understanding of the multicultural aspects of the region GP Med is operating in,
  • Exceptional initiative and follow-through skills that deliver measurable results,
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
  • Track record of writing, developing, pitching and placing stories that generate interest and response,
  • Availability for travelling in the region, Turkey, Italy, Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon.
  • Fluent in English. Turkish, Arabic or Hebrew would be a plus.
