In an era of digital communication and outreach, you have probably received a call or two about donating money to a certain social cause. You might have also heard stories about scammers preying on people’s generosity and exploiting their goodwill by making a phone call or sending an email asking for donations, without knowing where your donations are really going toward, whether it’s actually going to a good cause or for personal gain. We’re saddened by how criminals are capitalizing on the goodwill of the public when charities ask for donations to support their work for a better future for all.

As a legitimate organization, Greenpeace Malaysia is committed to transparency and being accountable for how we use your donations to uncover global and local environmental problems and encourage solutions that enable the realization of a more peaceful and greener future. Like most major charities in Malaysia, we raise funds in many different ways, including telefundraising.

What is a Telefundraiser

Telefundraising is a cost-effective way to inspire the public about our work, while raising funds to sustain our independence from governments and corporations. Beyond its cost-effectiveness, this method offers the opportunity for you to ask questions and learn more about Greenpeace Malaysia and the environmental issues we are facing over the phone.

How do I know if a fundraiser is genuine and not a scam?

Our telefundraising team will only call if you’ve shared your number with Greenpeace. We will never call from an unknown number. On every occasion, our tele-fundraisers start the call by introducing themselves, stating that they are calling on behalf of Greenpeace, and informing you that the call will be recorded for training and quality purposes.

If they ask you for a donation, they will not ask for your CSV/CVV number on your cards or bank transfers. Donating through our telefundraising channels is safe and secure. Our tele-fundraisers, representing Greenpeace Malaysia, have clear standards they work on and do not approach individuals, who are under the age of 18.

How We Use Your Donations

We use your donations to fund our work on a variety of environmental issues. Here are some of the works we carry out with your help:

Investigate and expose environmental abuses

We send teams of researchers and activists to conduct field investigations on for example, the broken system of recycling and its impacts on Malaysian society. The findings were shocking: a new ‘dump site’ of plastic waste from more than 19 countries, most of them are developed countries. We then use this information to expose these issues to the public and to pressure governments and corporations to take action.

Strategic partnerships to demand climate justice

We join forces with our local allies such as the CERAH Anti-Haze Action Group, and a coalition of civil society organizations, to file a complaint on the issue of clean, haze-free air as a basic human right to the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM). The complaint called for recommendations on solutions from the government and ways to empower haze-impacted individuals and communities to protect themselves and their families from the almost yearly domestic and transboundary haze through access to information and justice. It also marked the first ever complaint to SUHAKAM that connected environmental and human rights.

Volunteer and community activities

Our volunteers went to areas neighboring the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve in March 2020 to collect over 300 physically signed letters of objection to the mixed development project. The signatures collected were then handed over to the Selangor Forestry Department. Over 45,000 people also voiced their objections to the degazettement within the 30-day notice period.

The 30-day period ended with over 45,000 people voicing their objection towards the degazettement, received by the state government. Together with our volunteers, Greenpeace Malaysia went on-ground in areas neighbouring to the forest reserve to collect, then submit over 300 physically signed letters of objection to the Selangor Forestry Department.

Why You Can Trust Us

We are a transparent organization, and we are committed to using your donations wisely. We publish an annual report that details how your donations are being used. We also have an independent auditor who reviews our finances each year.

At Greenpeace, we highly respect our supporter’s privacy and adhere to our security policy to preserve their information. We will never sell or swap your information with other organizations. We use trusted companies like fundraising agencies and software platform providers to administer some activities, in which case they will use your details only for that purpose.

If You Suspect Any Other Type of Scam

If you suspect any other type of telefundraising scam, it is essential to take immediate precautions to protect yourself and your personal information. Greenpeace Malaysia urges you to not provide any sensitive details. To verify the legitimacy of the telefundraising campaign, ask for the organization’s name and contact information.

You can also report it to us at: [email protected]

Telefundraising is not just a means to raise funds; it is an opportunity for us to connect with you, our supporters, on a more personal level. Through these conversations, we share our passion for safeguarding the environment and gain valuable insights from your experiences and concerns. Together, we form a united front in the fight for a sustainable and greener world. As we continue to embrace the power of conversations, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to each one of you for being an integral part of our environmental mission. Your support fuels our determination to make positive impacts, one call at a time.

Your donations play a crucial role in empowering us to drive positive changes, protect our planet, and create a greener, more equitable world. One of the examples is we successfully exposed the source of imported plastic waste dumping sites in Malaysia with the help of our supporters. This led to the government of Malaysia taking action to send plastic waste back to its countries of origin.

With your support, we can make a lasting impact on the environment and inspire generations to come.
