Greenpeace action fights for clean air in this Raya and Earth Day, raising awareness on the need for a haze-free Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur – Greenpeace Malaysia unfolds a banner in front of the Petronas Twin Towers with a clear message for clean air this Raya celebrations.

Authorities have been on high-alert for haze as unhealthy levels of air pollution continue to rise, with several states including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kelantan and Johor experiencing polluted airways.

In a report released by Greenpeace in 2022, an estimate of 100% of Malaysia’s total population was exposed to PM2.5 levels that exceeded the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Guidelines that  recommends 15µg/m³ as the threshold concentration of PM2.5 for 24 hrs.

The banner deployed at Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) reads ‘All We Want For This Raya is Clean Air’, to mark Earth Day falling on the first day of this year’s Hari Raya celebrations, with a demand for our government to develop stronger policies addressing air pollution.

Among the solutions Greenpeace Malaysia proposes for stronger policies and enforcement includes a Clean Air or Transboundary Haze Pollution Act and amending the current 1974 Environmental Quality Act to include air pollution standards in line with the WHO Guidelines on PM2.5.
