Brussels – The new European Commission endorsed by the European Parliament on Wednesday will face an early test of its political direction as it prepares to navigate choppy seas, said Greenpeace.
Greenpeace EU executive director Jorgo Riss said: “It’s hard to see what this new Commission stands for, other than von der Leyen’s place at the helm. She will oversee a motley crew of commissioners rowing in different directions in a sea of unprecedented perils and uncertainty. The first 100 days will signal whether any green and social momentum survives to help people who struggle with the cost of living, job insecurity, and the threat of deadly floods and other extreme weather events. We will know soon enough how the EU responds to world events and what Commission plans on industry, competitiveness and farming are made of. Promises to deliver cleaner and smarter mobility, better homes, fairer farming that rewards sustainability, and a circular economy that reduces Europe’s dependence on raw materials are already colliding with pledges to slash environmental and social standards for polluters, lock in unlimited growth for big business at the expense of workers, and pursue free trade at all cost. If Europe fails them, where will the victims of floods, pollution or deregulation turn to?”
