(MONTRÉAL) – In response to the announcement of Walmart Canada’s Charter on Plastics, a commitment to reduce plastic waste across its operations, Greenpeace Canada’s spokesperson for the Oceans & Plastics Campaign Philippa Duchastel de Montrouge said:

“Walmart’s announcement shows that the company is listening to Canadians and acknowledging its role in the plastic pollution crisis. In the past two weeks, over 95 thousand Canadians signed Greenpeace Canada’s petition targeting Canada’s largest supermarkets like Walmart, demanding they ditch throwaway plastic packaging. Walmart’s suppliers should be paying close attention, as this is a strong signal that Walmart will be expecting suppliers to help meet targets for reducing their plastic footprint. While Walmart has taken an important first step by eliminating unnecessary plastic packaging in all its own private brand products in 2019, the company must do more worldwide to reduce its massive plastic footprint, and innovate away from its dependence on disposable products.”
