OTTAWA – In response to Minister Guilbeault announcement introducing a Federal Plastics Registry during the the High-level partnerships day’s opening Session at the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4), Sarah King, Head of Plastics & Oceans at Greenpeace Canada, said:
“A plastics registry is a welcomed development by the Canadian government to increase transparency across the plastic industry. Now we need this information to guide the government in creating reduction targets on overall plastic production, and in working to eliminate the most problematic polymers, chemicals and products to begin to transition away from our overdependence on plastic and address the plastic crisis across the lifecycle. All countries must put Big Plastic and Big Oil under a microscope that will inevitably reveal a justification for a global, legally binding reduction target on plastic production within the Global Plastics Treaty.”
