“Governments must be bolder and speed up the transition towards electric vehicles, ending any new light-duty gasoline vehicle sales by 2030 at the latest.* Introducing an electric vehicle availability standard is an essential element for the climate action toolbox, which needs to be swiftly implemented by governments.

To have a meaningful impact on climate, the internal combustion engine phase-out must be accompanied by a significant reduction of the vehicle fleet, decarbonization of the supply chain and plans to ensure workers’ rights are protected. The transition to electric vehicles must go hand-in-hand with better environmental and social oversight of mines to ensure the Free, Prior and Informed Consent of Indigenous Peoples and that local communities are respected.

Government plans should also involve far fewer private cars, more efficient public transportation systems, more carpooling options, and redesigning cities to make room for walking, biking and all forms of active and sustainable mobility,” said Patrick Bonin, Climate campaigner at Greenpeace Canada.

*According to a report published by Greenpeace Germany, automakers must stop selling diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles, including hybrids, by 2030 at the latest.
