In reaction to the adoption of the final COP15 deal, Reykia Fick, nature and food campaigner, Greenpeace Canada said:

“This announcement is a huge moment for nature, which is so important to everyone. While the deal isn’t perfect, we are happy to see a strong recognition of Indigenous rights and knowledge. This is the future of ethical and effective conservation worldwide.

The federal government was a constructive player in negotiations and took seriously its responsibility as host nation to secure a final deal, thanks in large part to the vocal engagement of civil society across Canada.

Despite these accomplishments, now the hard work begins to ensure strong biodiversity protection on the ground. There can be no loopholes that allow industry to continue business-as-usual. New legislation to protect nature and biodiversity in Canada, as Minister Guilbeault acknowledged last week, is urgently needed to make these new commitments a reality.”
