(TORONTO) In reaction to a letter by Canadian Ambassador to the EU Ailish Campbell, lobbying against new EU deforestation and degradation legislation for imported goods, Shane Moffatt, Head of Food & Nature at Greenpeace Canada, said:

While Canada is about to host the upcoming UN Biodiversity conference in Montreal, it’s shocking to learn the government is at the same time resisting strong measures in Europe to protect the world’s remaining forests. Deforestation and forest degradation from industrial logging are major causes of biodiversity loss and climate change globally. Canada is no exception – forests across the country remain significantly under protected and are losing wildlife and vast amounts of carbon every year.

As host of the UN Biodiversity conference, the Canadian government should be championing strong rules to ensure transparency and prevent deforestation and degradation that apply equally to all countries.”
