Ottawa – In response to reports of the Canadian Ambassador to Brazil’s invitation to join senior officials in the Brazilian government and other ambassadors on a visit to the Amazon region beginning tomorrow (November 4), Reykia Fick, Nature & Food Campaigner at Greenpeace Canada said:

“We call on the Canadian government to decline participation in this greenwashing attempt by the Bolsonaro government to cover up the true extent of devastation in the Amazon. Minister Champagne must condemn the dismantling of environmental and human rights protections that have resulted in the dramatic spike in fires, deforestation and violence against Indigenous Peoples that we are seeing now in the Amazon region and across Brazil.”

Details:

  • According to numerous sources, the Canadian ambassador has been included in an invitation for a number of ambassadors to tour the Amazon rainforest along a route that avoids locations impacted by recent fires and deforestation.
  • Greenpeace Brazil has sent a communique to the Canadian ambassador suggesting alternate routes for the tour to see examples of recent fires and deforestation.
