TORONTO — In response to the Speech from the Throne delivered to Parliament today, Greenpeace Canada’s statement is as follows:

Climate justice spokesperson Jesse Firempong said:

“This Throne Speech recognized that tackling coronavirus inequality and climate inequality go hand-in-hand. To turn this into real change for impacted communities — including to ensure they benefit from the green jobs promised today — we need to see fully-funded plans in the upcoming ministerial mandate letters and economic update. The women, Indigenous Peoples, and racialized and low-income communities on the frontlines of both crises should be front and centre in an equitable, feminist, green recovery.”

Senior Energy Strategist Keith Stewart said:

“We heard a lot of the right words today, but we’ve heard too many of these promises before to simply accept them on faith. It is time for our federal government to finally act — boldly and decisively — on the green energy and nature-based solutions that can put people to work solving our health, climate and inequality crises.”

Greenpeace drafted its own version of the Speech from the Throne last week, which it offered free-of-charge to the Liberals as inspiration. Tomorrow, Greenpeace will release a scorecard evaluating how the Liberals’ speech fared in comparison to recommended policies.
