Fantastisch nieuws: in de nasleep van het schandaal van de Monsanto Papers ziet minister van Landbouw Willy Borsus (MR) zich genoodzaakt om de verkoop van glyfosaat aan particulieren te verbieden in België. Eindelijk neemt de federale regering haar verantwoordelijkheid.
Twee mysteryshoppers, gewapend met drie verborgen camera’s, trokken naar verschillende Bricowinkels om te vragen hoe ze best hun terras/oprit onkruidvrij maken. Opvallend: de marktleider blijft glyfosaathoudende producten zoals Roundup aanprijzen - die volkomen onschadelijk zijn, als we sommige verkopers mogen geloven.
Terwijl het Europese Chemicaliënagentschap oordeelt dat glyfosaat niet het predicaat ‘kankerverwekkend’ verdient, is een recente VN-studie ongenadig hard voor de producenten: de wereld heeft geen pesticiden nodig. Enkele maanden eerder dan verwacht heeft het Europese Agentschap voor chemische stoffen (ECHA) zijn licht laten schijnen over glyfosaat, de meest gebruikte onkruidverdelger ter wereld. Samen met verschillende andere organisaties lanceert Greenpeace een Europees burgerinitiatief voor een verbod op glyfosaat in de EU. Het is de actieve stof in producten als Monsanto’s Roundup en de meest gebruikte onkruidverdelger in Europa, maar ook erg omstreden want schadelijk voor mens en milieu.
Heb je al gehoord van neonicotinoïden? Dat is een groep pesticiden waarvan intussen bewezen is dat ze zeer schadelijk zijn voor honingbijen. Daarom heeft Europa in 2013 (terecht) het gebruik van drie van zulke neonicotinoïden aan banden gelegd. Maar het is hoog tijd dat de Europese Commissie deze bestrijdingsmiddelen volledig bant én ecologische alternatieven promoot.
De ecologische landbouw zit in de lift, maar in heel wat Europese landen zijn er weinig structuren of middelen om kennis en ervaring onder landbouwers uit te wisselen. Daarom lanceert Greenpeace Farmers2Farmers.org, een platform van en vóór boeren.
Greenpeace heeft een lijst gepubliceerd met de 520 pesticides die in Europa geregistreerd en toegelaten zijn. 209 van die pesticides zijn gevaarlijk voor mens en dier en werden opgenomen in een zwarte lijst. Deze lijst is in de eerste plaats een middel om giftige pesticides te herkennen en het gebruik ervan te ontmoedigen.
