Welcoming the launch of Mauritania’s Report to the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI), yesterday, Monday 25 April 2022, Abdoulaye NDIAYE, Oceans Campaigner for Greenpeace Africa urges Senegal to follow Mauritania’s example in the transparency of industrial fishing licenses.

On Friday 22 April 2022, Mauritania launched its 2nd Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) Report covering the calendar years 2019 and 2020. This report deals with information related to the twelve transparency requirements of the FITI Standard and demonstrates the efforts implemented by Mauritania to improve transparency in fisheries management.

This report makes available to the public unpublished information on fishing agreements and conventions between countries and foreign private groups, the status of stocks, the list of large-scale fishing vessels, payments and catches, etc. These data are indispensable and crucial to inform citizens about the fishing sector in their country.

Unlike Mauritania, Senegal has been slow, since 2016, to complete the steps to join this important initiative that is the FiTI. However, the professionals of the artisanal fisheries sector of Senegal have repeatedly expressed their wish to see the public commitment of His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Senegal to make Senegal join the FiTI initiative.

In addition, the fishing professionals and the civil society have constantly requested the publication of the list of industrial fishing vessels authorized to fish in the exclusive economic zone (ZEE) of Senegal by the competent authority. These requests would naturally have been met if Senegal had respected its commitment to join the FiTI.

Greenpeace Africa reminds the Government of Senegal that the good governance advocated by the authorities begins with transparency in the management of the country’s fisheries resources and access to reliable and up-to-date information on the management of these resources for professionals in the fishing sector.
