5 April 2018, Johannesburg – Newly appointed Minister of Energy Jeff Radebe signed the renewable energy agreements with 27 independent power producers on behalf of state-owned power utility Eskom, his department said.
The Minister said of the renewable energy agreements, “Our people deserve access to clean affordable electricity, which would not have a negative impact on the environment and their health. I can proudly say that it is also an effective climate change mitigant and a water smart programme.”
Greenpeace Africa’s Senior Political Advisor Happy Khambule says, “This is indicative of what we hope will be the beginning of progressive conversations around a just transition to renewable energy in the interests of the people of South Africa. The road leading to this moment has been fuelled by uncertainty and we are optimistic that the Minister recognises the socio-economic benefits of an economy powered by renewable energy.
“What is critical now is that momentum is maintained – these renewable energy projects are not an end-point, they must be seen as the foundation for a new beginning. It is critical that the pathway to a just transition to renewable energy is mapped out, and that the remaining artificial limits and barriers to renewable energy are removed. We trust that Minister Radebe will take equally decisive steps to ensure that a progressive IRP will be published in the immediate future.”
