Sanders Calls for Green New Deal, No New Fossil Fuels in New Climate Platform – Greenpeace Response

April 16, 2019

Washington, DC — Last night, Bernie Sanders released a plan for how he would tackle climate change as president, including his support for a Green New Deal and a ban on new fossil fuel leasing on public lands. In response, Greenpeace USA Climate Campaign Director Janet Redman said:

“Bernie just became the second Democratic presidential hopeful, after Elizabeth Warren, to declare support for an end to fossil fuel expansion, including banning extraction on public lands. That is exactly the kind of leadership we need if we hope to stop the worst impacts of climate change — now we invite the other candidates to step up to the plate and show us they will take on the fossil fuel industry.

“We absolutely need a Green New Deal to accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy — which many of the Democratic candidates have endorsed — and to stop the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure. We need a president who is willing to say ‘yes’ to the good and ‘no’ to the bad. And that means confronting the architects of the climate crisis: the fossil fuel industry.”
