Keystone XL Pipeline Delayed Again as Judge Denies TransCanada Critical Permit

"In the past decade, every proposed tar sands pipeline — including the Keystone XL, Energy East, and Trans Mountain pipelines — has been stopped or delayed by a powerful movement fighting for Indigenous rights, a clean energy economy, and our environment."

In response to the news that the Ninth Circuit Court has blocked pre-construction on the Keystone XL pipeline before the project has undergone full environmental review, Greenpeace USA Climate Campaigner Rachel Rye Butler said:

“At a time when the Trump administration is doing everything in its power to roll back environmental protections, the court’s decision today is an important victory for people fighting to protect their land, water, and our shared climate. No oil pipeline is safe, and TransCanada’s record over the past decade does little assuage concerns of a spill. As today’s inspiring Youth Climate Strikes underline, we can’t afford to burn this oil in the first place if we want to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.”

“Today’s decision is yet another opportunity to break free from fossil fuels and move toward the 100% renewable energy future we deserve. In the past decade, every proposed tar sands pipeline — including the Keystone XL, Energy East, and Trans Mountain pipelines — has been stopped or delayed by a powerful movement fighting for Indigenous rights, a clean energy economy, and our environment. This movement is going to continue to fight fossil fuel projects that our economy doesn’t need and our climate can’t afford.”
